Why Control4
The problem Control4 solves is not really technology, it is operation. A house with eight remotes and six apps is not a smart house, and a venue where only one manager knows how to get the TVs on is not a smooth venue. Control4 is a control layer that sits over everything you already have and reduces it to something anyone can drive.
One interface over everything
Control4 speaks to thousands of third-party products, so your existing TVs, receivers, streamers, cameras, locks, blinds and air conditioning end up behind one interface instead of one app each. That consolidation is the whole product.
The same experience on every surface
App, wall touchscreen, keypad or handheld remote all behave the same way. Nobody has to learn a different system depending on what they happen to be holding, which is what makes it usable by guests, family and casual staff.
One button that ends the night
A shutdown scene turns off the lights, powers down every display and amplifier, locks the doors and arms the security in a single press. It turns closing up from a lap of the building into one press on the way out.
It opens the building for you
Schedules run on the clock rather than on somebody remembering. Lights and music come up before doors open, the volume steps through the day, and the outdoor lighting follows dusk without anyone touching a switch.
Serious about video in a room full of screens
Multi-Display Manager handles up to eighteen displays at once with 4K and 8K processing and Dolby Atmos support. Getting the right game on the right screen stops being a job for whoever is best with the remotes.
Audio that goes where you want it
Multi-source, multi-zone audio with Spotify, Apple Music and AirPlay 2 built in, so the dining room, the courtyard and the bar can run different music at different volumes from one interface.
You can see it from anywhere
Remote access and push notifications mean you can check the venue is closed, the alarm is set and the doors are locked from your phone, and turn things off if they are not.
It grows with the room
Start with audio and TVs and add lighting, climate, cameras, door stations and networking later. The interface does not change as the system grows, so nobody has to relearn it.
New build or existing building
Control4 is designed to be added to buildings that already exist, using the wiring and equipment that is already there wherever possible. It does not require a rewire to be worth doing.
In a home, and in a venue
We use Control4 for both, and the difference is less about the hardware than about who has to operate it. A family learns their system over months. A new bartender gets about ninety seconds.
Residential
The everyday version of a smart home, rather than the demonstration version.
- One remote instead of a drawer full. Watch, Listen, Movie Night. The source, the amplifier, the projector, the screen and the lights all move together on a single press.
- Music through the house. Different rooms, different music, or the same track everywhere, from the app or a keypad by the door.
- Lighting scenes that suit the hour. Evening, entertaining, away and goodnight, with outdoor lighting following dusk automatically.
- Cameras and doors on the same screen. See the front door from the TV or the touchscreen, unlock it for a delivery, and get a notification when the kids get home.
- Climate and blinds included. Air conditioning, fans, heating and motorised blinds under the same scenes as everything else.
- It still works for guests. The interface is simple enough that a house sitter or a visitor can use it without a tutorial.
Restaurants, bars and venues
Where the system has to survive a busy Friday and a brand new staff member.
- Open and close on one button. An opening scene brings up lights, music and displays. A closing scene shuts everything down, locks up and arms the alarm.
- Staff-proof by design. Front of house gets a simple keypad or a locked-down touchscreen with the four things they actually need, not the whole system.
- Zoned audio with sensible limits. The courtyard, the dining room and the bar run their own sources and volumes, with maximum levels set so nobody can turn the room into a nightclub at lunch.
- Sport on the right screens. Route any source to any display, save the layouts you use most, and change them without a huddle around the AV rack.
- The day runs itself. Lighting steps down as the evening goes on, music changes with the service, and the whole thing follows the trading hours you actually keep.
- You can check it from home. Confirm the venue closed properly, and fix it from your phone if it did not.
The hospitality case in one sentence
Most venue AV problems are not equipment failures. They are a staff member who cannot find the right input, a room that is too loud at the wrong time of day, and a closing routine that depends on somebody remembering nine separate switches.
Control4 turns those three things into buttons. That is a smaller claim than most automation marketing makes, and it is the one that actually saves you money.

Control4 is a platform rather than a single product, so what gets specified depends on who is using it and where. These are the pieces most projects include.
Keypads, dimmers, thermostats, door stations, cameras, speakers and networking round out the range, and Control4 also drives equipment you already own.
Our commitment on a Control4 project
Control4 is a dealer-programmed platform. The hardware is the same wherever you buy it, so the quality of your system is really the quality of whoever programs it. That is worth asking hard questions about, including of us. Here is what we hold ourselves to.
- We program what we install. The same team that scopes the job builds the scenes, schedules and interfaces, so nothing is lost in a handover to a subcontracted programmer.
- We design the interface around the person using it. A homeowner, a chef and a casual bartender need different screens. Giving everyone the full system is lazy, and it is why so many venue systems end up unused.
- We train your people, not just the owner. On a venue we run through it with the staff who will actually open and close, not only the manager who signed the contract.
- We document and label. Rack equipment, cabling and keypads labelled to match the documentation, so a fault at 6pm on a Friday is a five minute job rather than an investigation.
- We keep your project files and hand them over on request. Control4 is a proprietary platform, so we cannot pretend you are as portable as you would be on an open standard. What we can do is make sure nothing about your system is hidden from you.
- We stay available after handover. New TVs, a renovation, a change of menu or trading hours, a staff turnover. Adjustments are expected work, not an imposition.
Common questions
Do we have to replace the equipment we already have?
Usually not. Control4 is designed to control other manufacturers equipment, so existing TVs, amplifiers, streamers, cameras and air conditioning can often stay exactly where they are and simply come under one interface. We will tell you honestly if something is too old or too closed to control properly.
Can we make changes ourselves, or do we have to call you every time?
Day to day changes are yours. Scenes, playlists, schedules, favourites and volume limits are adjustable from the app. Deeper changes, like adding equipment or rebuilding an interface, are programming work and we do those. We would rather you could do the everyday things without us.
Will our staff actually use it?
That depends almost entirely on how it is set up, which is why we design the front of house interface down to a handful of clearly labelled actions. A staff member should be able to open the venue without training and close it without a checklist.
Does it need the internet to work?
No for the core of it. The controller runs locally, so scenes, keypads, remotes and touchscreens keep working if the internet drops. Remote access from your phone and some streaming services do need a connection, as you would expect.
Can it be installed in an existing home or venue?
Yes, and most of our Control4 work is exactly that. Retrofit is a normal case rather than a compromise, and a site visit is how we work out what can be reused and what needs cabling.
How does this compare to KNX?
Different tools for different jobs. KNX is an open standard and tends to suit projects where the electrical services are the heart of the system and the building will outlive several integrators. Control4 is stronger on entertainment, on user experience and on retrofit, and it is quicker to deploy in an existing venue. We install both, so we have no reason to push you toward one.

Control4 is a control and entertainment layer, and it is at its best when it is not also being asked to be the electrical infrastructure. On larger projects we put an open lighting bus underneath it and let each platform do the part it is actually good at.
